Red Malabar Spinach (Basella rubra) is a vigorous, heat-loving vining annual that thrives when regular spinach bolts and gives up. The thick, glossy leaves have a mild, slightly mucilaginous texture similar to spinach and are excellent stir-fried, sautéed, added to soups, or used fresh in salads. The striking red stems make it as ornamental as it is edible.

Plants climb readily up trellises, fences, and arbors, reaching 6 feet or more in a single season. In late summer, small ornamental blooms appear along the stems. A great choice for edible landscaping, vertical gardens, and anyone who wants a productive green that actually loves the heat.
