A planter should support the plant, fit the growing pot, and work with the room. Use this guide to compare planter size, drainage, materials, and display styles before you order.

Match the planter to the nursery pot

Measure the nursery pot across the top and check its height. A decorative cachepot should be slightly wider so the growing pot can lift out without getting stuck. If you are repotting directly into a new container, move up gradually instead of choosing a pot that is dramatically larger than the root ball.

Understand drainage

Planters with drainage holes let excess water escape and are useful when planting directly into the container. A planter without drainage can still work as a decorative cover: keep the plant in its nursery pot, remove it for watering, and empty any standing water before returning it. Saucers and trays help protect furniture, but they do not replace careful watering.

Compare common planter materials

  • Cement and concrete: stable, substantial, and well suited to modern spaces.
  • Ceramic: available in many finishes and weights; always check whether drainage is included.
  • Lightweight or printed materials: easier to move and useful for shelves or hanging displays.
  • Natural fibers and macramé: add texture while holding a separate pot or cachepot.

Build the display around the room
