Succulent Care Guide

Succulents are water-storing plants that come in amazing varieties of shapes, colors, and sizes. They're perfect for busy plant parents and bright spaces.

Light Requirements

Most succulents need bright, direct sunlight for 6+ hours daily. South-facing windows are ideal. Gradually acclimate to prevent sunburn.

Watering

Water deeply but infrequently. Soak the soil completely, then let it dry out completely before watering again. Usually every 1-3 weeks.

Soil & Drainage

Use well-draining cactus/succulent soil mix. Ensure pots have drainage holes. Add perlite or sand for extra drainage if needed.

Temperature

Most prefer temperatures between 60-80°F. Many can tolerate brief cold snaps but protect from frost.

Seasonal Care

Reduce watering in winter when growth slows. Some succulents go dormant and need very little water.

Common Problems

  • Stretching (etiolation): Insufficient light
  • Soft, mushy leaves: Overwatering or rot
  • Wrinkled leaves: Underwatering
  • Brown/black spots: Fungal issues from overwatering

Popular Types

Echeveria, Sedum, Jade plants, Aloe, Haworthia, and Crassula are great beginner succulents.
