Orchid Care Guide
Orchids are exotic flowering plants that seem intimidating but are actually quite manageable with the right care. Phalaenopsis (moth orchids) are the most beginner-friendly.
Light Requirements
Bright, indirect light is essential. East or north-facing windows are ideal. Avoid direct sunlight which can burn the leaves.
Watering
Water weekly by running lukewarm water through the pot for 15 seconds. Let excess water drain completely. Never let orchids sit in standing water.
Humidity & Air Circulation
Need 40-70% humidity and good air circulation. Use humidity trays or group with other plants. Ensure gentle air movement.
Potting Medium
Use special orchid bark mix, never regular potting soil. Orchids are epiphytes and need excellent drainage and air around roots.
Temperature
Prefer temperatures 65-80°F during day, 60-70°F at night. Temperature drop at night can encourage blooming.
Fertilizing
Use diluted orchid fertilizer weekly during growing season. 'Weakly weekly' is the motto - very diluted but regular feeding.
Blooming Cycle
Orchids bloom once or twice yearly. After blooms fade, cut the spike above a node to encourage reblooming.
Common Problems
- Yellow leaves: Natural aging or overwatering
- Wrinkled leaves: Underwatering or root problems
- No blooms: Insufficient light or needs temperature variation
- Root rot: Overwatering or poor drainage
Repotting
Repot every 1-2 years when bark breaks down or roots overflow pot. Use fresh orchid bark mix.
