Jade Plant Care Guide

Jade Plants (Crassula ovata) are classic succulents known for their thick, glossy leaves and tree-like growth. Often called 'money trees,' they're symbols of good luck and prosperity in many cultures.

Light Requirements

Need bright, direct sunlight for 4-6 hours daily. South-facing windows are ideal. Insufficient light causes leggy growth and poor leaf color.

Watering

Water deeply but infrequently. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Usually every 2-3 weeks in growing season, less in winter. Overwatering is the most common mistake.

Soil & Fertilizer

Use well-draining cactus/succulent soil mix. Ensure pots have drainage holes. Fertilize 2-3 times during growing season with diluted succulent fertilizer.

Temperature & Humidity

Prefer temperatures 65-75°F but tolerate a wide range. Normal household humidity is fine. Can tolerate cooler temperatures in winter (50-60°F).

Growth & Pruning

Slow to moderate growth, developing a thick trunk over time. Prune to maintain shape and encourage branching. Pinch growing tips for bushier growth.

Flowering

Mature plants may produce small, star-shaped white or pink flowers in winter with proper care and a cool rest period.

Common Problems

  • Soft, mushy leaves: Overwatering or root rot
  • Wrinkled leaves: Underwatering (though they're quite drought tolerant)
  • Leggy growth: Insufficient light
  • Leaf drop: Stress from overwatering or environmental changes

Varieties

Popular varieties include 'Gollum' (tubular leaves), 'Hobbit' (spoon-shaped leaves), and variegated forms with cream or yellow edges.

Longevity

With proper care, jade plants can live for decades and become impressive specimen plants with thick, woody trunks.
