Croton Care Guide
Crotons (Codiaeum variegatum) are vibrant tropical plants known for their colorful, variegated leaves in shades of red, orange, yellow, and green. They're perfect for adding bold color to any indoor space.
Light Requirements
Need very bright, direct light to maintain their vibrant colors. 6+ hours of bright light daily. Insufficient light causes colors to fade and leaves to turn green.
Watering
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when top inch feels dry. Crotons are sensitive to both overwatering and underwatering.
Soil & Fertilizer
Use well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture. Fertilize monthly during growing season with balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Temperature & Humidity
Prefer warm temperatures 60-85°F. Need high humidity (40-80%). Use humidifiers, pebble trays, or group with other plants. Avoid cold drafts.
Leaf Colors & Varieties
Colors intensify with proper light and care. Popular varieties include 'Petra' (red and yellow), 'Mammy' (red and black), and 'Gold Dust' (yellow speckled).
Maintenance
Clean leaves regularly to maintain their glossy appearance. Remove any dead or damaged leaves. Pinch growing tips to encourage bushier growth.
Common Problems
- Leaf drop: Environmental stress, drafts, or watering issues
- Fading colors: Insufficient light
- Brown leaf edges: Low humidity or water quality
- Spider mites: Common in low humidity - increase moisture
Toxicity Warning
Crotons are toxic to pets and children if ingested. The milky sap can also cause skin irritation. Keep out of reach and wash hands after handling.
Seasonal Care
May go semi-dormant in winter with reduced growth. Reduce watering and fertilizing during this time but maintain humidity and light levels.
