Cactus Care Guide

Cacti are specialized succulents adapted to desert conditions. They're incredibly low-maintenance and come in fascinating shapes and sizes.

Light Requirements

Need very bright, direct sunlight. 6-8 hours of direct sun daily is ideal. South or west-facing windows work best.

Watering

Water very sparingly! Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water every 2-4 weeks in growing season, less in winter.

Soil & Drainage

Use fast-draining cactus soil mix. Add extra perlite or sand for drainage. Pots must have drainage holes.

Temperature

Most prefer warm temperatures (70-90°F) but can tolerate cooler nights. Many need a cool winter period to bloom.

Seasonal Care

Reduce watering significantly in winter. Many cacti need a cool, dry rest period (50-60°F) to trigger spring blooms.

Handling Safety

Use thick gloves or tongs when handling. Be careful of spines and glochids (tiny barbed bristles).

Common Problems

  • Soft, yellow base: Root rot from overwatering
  • Stretching: Insufficient light
  • No blooms: Needs cool winter rest period
  • Scale insects: Check regularly and treat promptly

Popular Types

Barrel cactus, Prickly pear, Christmas cactus, Bunny ears, and Saguaro are popular varieties.

Repotting

Repot every 2-3 years in spring. Use protective gear and be very gentle with roots.
