Bird of Paradise Care Guide

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia) is a stunning tropical plant known for its large, paddle-shaped leaves and exotic orange and blue flowers. A true showstopper for any indoor space.

Light Requirements

Needs very bright, indirect light with some direct sunlight. South or west-facing windows are ideal. Insufficient light prevents flowering and causes poor growth.

Watering

Water when top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Prefers consistent moisture during growing season but allow slight drying between waterings. Reduce in winter.

Soil & Fertilizer

Use well-draining potting mix with good organic content. Fertilize monthly during spring and summer with balanced fertilizer. They are heavy feeders when actively growing.

Temperature & Humidity

Prefers warm temperatures 65-80°F. Loves high humidity (50-60%). Use humidifier, pebble trays, or group with other plants to increase humidity.

Size & Growth

Can grow 6-8 feet tall indoors with proper care. Leaves naturally split as they mature - this is normal and adds to their tropical appeal.

Flowering

Indoor flowering is rare but possible with optimal conditions: bright light, maturity (4-5 years), and proper care. Flowers resemble colorful birds in flight.

Common Problems

  • Brown leaf edges: Low humidity or fluoride in water
  • Split/torn leaves: Natural occurrence or low humidity
  • No new growth: Insufficient light or nutrients
  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or natural aging

Maintenance

Clean leaves regularly with damp cloth to remove dust. Remove dead or damaged leaves at the base. Rotate plant weekly for even growth.

Repotting

Repot every 2-3 years or when rootbound. Choose a heavy pot as these plants can become top-heavy. Spring is the best time for repotting.
