Anthurium Care Guide
Anthuriums are stunning tropical plants known for their glossy, heart-shaped flowers (spathes) in vibrant reds, pinks, and whites. These exotic beauties bring year-round color to any indoor space.
Light Requirements
Need bright, indirect light. Some morning sun is beneficial but avoid harsh direct sunlight which can fade flowers and scorch leaves.
Watering
Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when top inch feels dry. Use lukewarm water and ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
Soil & Fertilizer
Use well-draining, chunky potting mix similar to orchid bark. Add perlite or orchid bark to regular potting soil. Fertilize monthly with diluted liquid fertilizer.
Temperature & Humidity
Prefer warm temperatures 65-85°F. Need high humidity (60-80%). Use humidifiers, pebble trays, or group with other tropical plants.
Flowering
With proper care, Anthuriums can bloom year-round. Each flower lasts 6-8 weeks. Remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms.
Air Circulation
Good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal issues. Use a small fan on low setting or ensure natural air movement around the plant.
Common Problems
- Brown leaf tips: Low humidity or fluoride in water
- Yellow leaves: Overwatering or natural aging
- No flowers: Insufficient light or needs fertilizer
- Root rot: Poor drainage or overwatering
- Scale insects: Check regularly and treat promptly
Varieties
Popular varieties include red 'Dakota', pink 'Pink Champion', white 'White Champion', and the dramatic black 'Black Queen'.
Repotting
Repot every 2-3 years or when rootbound. Use a slightly larger pot with excellent drainage. Spring is the best time for repotting.
Toxicity
Toxic to pets and children if ingested. Keep out of reach and wash hands after handling.
