Alocasia Care Guide

Alocasias, also known as Elephant Ears or African Masks, are stunning tropical plants with dramatic arrow-shaped leaves and bold patterns. These eye-catching plants make incredible statement pieces but require specific care.

Light Requirements

Prefer bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon sunlight which can scorch the leaves. Insufficient light causes poor growth and loss of variegation.

Watering

Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during growing season. Allow top 1-2 inches to dry between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter when plant may go dormant.

Soil & Fertilizer

Use well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture. Add peat moss or coco coir for moisture retention. Fertilize monthly during growing season with diluted liquid fertilizer.

Temperature & Humidity

Need warm temperatures 65-85°F and high humidity (50-60%). Use humidifiers, pebble trays, or group with other plants. Avoid cold drafts and temperature fluctuations.

Dormancy Period

Many Alocasias naturally go dormant in winter, losing all leaves. This is normal! Reduce watering and wait for new growth in spring. The bulb/rhizome remains alive underground.

Popular Varieties

  • Alocasia Polly (Amazonica): Dark green with white veins, compact size
  • Alocasia Zebrina: Striking zebra-striped stems
  • Alocasia Black Velvet: Velvety black leaves with white veins
  • Alocasia Frydek: Large arrow-shaped leaves with prominent veining
  • Alocasia Dragon Scale: Thick, textured leaves resembling dragon scales

Common Problems

  • Yellow leaves: Natural aging, overwatering, or entering dormancy
  • Brown leaf edges: Low humidity, fluoride in water, or overfertilizing
  • Drooping leaves: Underwatering, low humidity, or temperature stress
  • Spider mites: Common in low humidity conditions
  • Complete leaf loss: Often normal winter dormancy

Water Quality

Sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water. Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater when possible for best results.

Toxicity

Toxic to pets and children if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation. Keep out of reach and wash hands after handling.
