Red Anthurium — Live Flowering Houseplant

The Red Anthurium (Anthurium andraeanum), commonly known as the Flamingo Flower, is one of the most striking and long-blooming tropical houseplants available. With its bold, lacquered red spathes and deep green, glossy foliage, this plant delivers year-round visual impact that few indoor plants can match.

Each plant arrives established and rooted in a 6-inch nursery pot, ready to settle into its new home. Bloom count and flower stage vary naturally from plant to plant — you may receive a plant with open blooms, developing buds, or both, all of which reflect the healthy, living nature of this species.

Whether displayed on a windowsill, shelf, or desk, the Red Anthurium brings a refined, botanical presence to any interior space. It is equally well-suited as a personal indulgence or a thoughtful gift for plant enthusiasts and beginners alike.

Care Guide

Light

Red Anthuriums thrive in bright, indirect light. A position near an east- or north-facing window, or set back from a south- or west-facing window, is ideal. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the foliage and fade the blooms. Low light is tolerated but will reduce flowering frequency.

Water

Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch, then allow excess water to drain completely. Anthuriums are sensitive to overwatering — soggy soil leads to root rot. Reduce watering frequency in winter when growth slows. Always use room-temperature water when possible.

Humidity

As a tropical species, the Red Anthurium prefers humidity levels of 60% or higher. Misting the foliage, placing the pot on a pebble tray with water, or using a humidifier nearby will support healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Avoid placing the plant near heating vents or air conditioning units.

Temperature

Maintain indoor temperatures between 65°F and 85°F (18°C–29°C). Anthuriums are cold-sensitive and should not be exposed to temperatures below 55°F (13°C) or sudden drafts.

Fertilizer

Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 6–8 weeks during the active growing season (spring through summer). Avoid over-fertilizing, which can inhibit blooming. No fertilizer is needed during the winter rest period.

Repotting

Repot every 2–3 years or when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes. Choose a pot one size larger and use a well-draining, chunky aroid mix or a blend of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark.

Pruning

Remove spent blooms and yellowing leaves at the base to encourage new growth and maintain a tidy appearance. Clean the glossy leaves periodically with a damp cloth to remove dust and support photosynthesis.
